How To Get Rid of Greasy Hair
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that you should only wash your hair every 2-3 days if not more. If you’re someone who struggles with greasy hair then I’m sure you're wondering how that’s even possible. You’ve probably heard suggestions that you need to “train” your hair but even when you tried to train your hair it never worked. Even worse if you also have a dandruff and an itchy scalp. How both oily hair and dandruff are possible, I'm not sure but I know it is.
Well, after many failed trials I finally found a solution to get rid of oily hair and itchy scalp. I’ll get straight to it and tell you the two changes that made a noticeable difference was finding the right shampoo for my scalp and buying a shower water filter.
Finding the right shampoo for my scalp was tougher than I thought because there are many brands that claim to be sulfate and paraben free but contain so many other toxic ingredients that may be harming our scalp. The reason for this is because the FDA that regulates what ingredients can and can’t be used in our hair products is a little behind in certain areas compared to other parts of the world. Many ingredients that have been banned in other countries because it was proven to be harmful are yet to be banned in the US. Now instead of giving a long list of ingredients you should avoid that you won’t remember, I’m going to provide a list of a few shampoos I have researched that are safe. (skip to the end for list)
My favorite shampoo and conditioner that I am currently using is from Shea Moisture. I have straight long hair so I use their 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Daily Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner. The first night I used this shampoo I felt an immediate relief to my itchy scalp. I also noticed a decrease in dandruff the next day compared to the shampoo I was using previously.
Although my scalp was doing much better, I felt like it still wasn’t the best it could be. Then one day I came across a TikTok video promoting a shower filter. I did my research and learned the benefits of having a water filter. I live in a big US city and even though our water is considered safe, we can still benefit from having a filter. This ensures our water is free of contaminants, like chlorine, which is common in big cities. It can also be beneficial for anyone living in an older apartment building or house that has old water pipes. The pipes could be rusting and releasing other harmful metals. Now this information isn’t to worry you, but instead explains why I personally felt such relief when I finally ordered a shower filter.
I use AquaBliss SP500 from amazon and noticed a huge difference in my hair after day one. My hair felt so much softer and looked shinier. After a few washes I noticed my dandruff disappeared and I was finally able to reduce greasy hair. Now I can wash my hair every 2-3 days and it doesn’t look nearly as oily it used to. Keep in mind I workout 4-5 times a week so adding shows filter really made a difference! The filter is also super easy to install and does not require any additional tools. There are other shower filters that have great ratings as well that I’m sure you can find online.
Now here is a list of shampoos I have researched that are safe to use:
Shea Moisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Daily Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner
Native Shampoo - Coconut & Vanilla
Native Shampoo - Almond & Shea
Maui Moisture - Hibiscus Water Shampoo
Raw Sugar - The Scalp Restore
Disclaimer: I found that other scents/variations of shampoo from the same brands listed above (except for Shea Moisture) are not safe. Different scents sometimes require different ingredients but the shampoos listed above are safe to use. I did not dive deep into every scent, so there may be more that are safe. These are just a few I found.
About 90% of Shea Moisture products I researched are safe to use, even when I branched into lotions and face products but I will do another blog on that later.
